Built in 1888 and expanded in 1895, Hotel Laguna soon became a popular destination for celebrities and notable local residents of that era. As the property currently sits in disrepair, Laguna Beach Company’s vision is to restore the historic building to its former glory while modernizing it to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, which would make it the first LEED certified hotel in Laguna.
Laguna Beach Company is working with historic preservation consultant Robert Chattel of Chattel Inc. toward getting Hotel Laguna certified as a historic landmark with the National Register of Historic Places. Laguna Beach Company intends to preserve the historic integrity and beauty of the hotel, including the façade’s original Mission Revival style dating back to 1930, while adding modern amenities consistent with National Register requirements.
New amenities will include a public rooftop bar and private pool deck for hotel guests to help restore the splendor and glamour of the hotel and its status as a romantic destination. Other design features will allow for increased public access, views and usable spaces. For example, the current Main Beach boardwalk would be extended across the entire length of the Coastal Bluffs. The new plan would also substantially increase available parking, all of it underground.

The Central Bluffs project is located along Coast Highway between the Wyland property and Legion street and will revitalize and beautify the area while continuing the mix of uses that are there now. The proposed plans include hotel casitas, retail and restaurants, along with added space for artists, other merchants and music. The integrated plan will expand public spaces while maintaining the creative, unique character of this landmark stretch of Coast Highway.
